One of my favorite gardens we visited on our Yorkshire Garden Trip was Newby Hall . Newby Hall was make for William Weddell , but the first home was n’t like the stately one now standing . The primary part of the current house was designed bySir Christopher Wrenfor Sir Edward Blackett . Sir Blackett must have had some pull to get Wren who also designedSt . Paul ’s Cathedraland many other building after the Great Fire of London in 1666 .
The Weddell family eventually acquired the land and the home and set about making it theirs . They made improvements and utilize architects to enlarge the house . If you fuck the television show , Downton Abbey , as I did , you ’ll be happy to be intimate that areal Lord Granthamlived in the home at one clip , and it is presently owned by Richard & Lucinda Compton , who are link up indirectly to the Weddell fellowship . Complicated , is n’t it?Lucinda Compton is a conservationistwhich is good since she now co - possess a historical property .
Newby Hall has been the film typeset for many television shows and motion-picture show , include star as bothBuckingham Palace and Kensington Palacein the ITV seriesVictoria .

But , as beautiful as the house is , I was more concerned in the garden .
Of of course , I was .
Newby Hall is surrounded by forty Accho of gardens . You read that right . Forty glorious acre filled with statuary , arbor , arbors and mature trees and shrubs .

Wide-angled steps in Newby Hall planted with heat-loving plants. I thought the texture was particularly nice.
Richard Compton ’s grandfather , Major Edward Compton , inherited Newby Hall in 1921 , and there were n’t many garden leave to see . In fact , he is often quote as say “ I found I had inherit an exceptionally beautiful plate but no garden to speak of – a lovely picture but no build . ”
Major Compton altogether redesigned the gardens , and it took him over fifty days to finish his “ Grand Design . ” He die in 1977 . Here you could show morehistory about the gardens , His Word , Robin Compton VMH , was a botanist who put his own stamp on his father ’s blueprint , and his wife , Jane , also know flower figure . They both carry on the bequest .
Lucinda Compton andMark Jackson , Head Gardener , now manage the gardens with volunteer help and adedicated garden squad . Although the gardens are comparatively new in comparison to the nursing home ’s historic period , they seem very matured because of the magnanimous trees on the property . Bill and I found these tree to be invaluable on the daytime we visited because the weather was quite hot .

In June , Yorkshire was in the midst of a drouth which you could see from the John M. Browning in the Great Lawn . Newby Hall hold theNational Cornus Collectionof flowering dogwood , and we were correct in time to see them at their best .
However , by far , my favorite garden was Sylvia ’s Garden . I thought its gate and multi - level sunken room was charming , and the environ yew hedge was the perfect backdrop for all these grotesque blossom . Sylvia ’s Garden was one of the earliest gardens designed and planted by Major Compton . It was named after his wife , Sylvia Farquharson , and it is now her memorial garden . Although it is very formal in style , it does n’t sense that way because billowy blooms spill into walkways . In fact , it feel almost frothy . Please select the photos in the gallery , above , to enlarge them . They are deserving seeing for their recherche detail .
Newby Hall also gasconade a tiddler ’s garden and a miniature railroad track which is quite pop . I ’m dingy I did n’t take any picture of the latter because I was overwhelmed at all of the other garden , and honestly , railroad garden are just not my thing .

Please do n’t detest me for it .
I did feel this beautiful Damask rose for you .
What else can I say about Newby Hall ? Next clip , if I have prison term , I ’ll also visit the household . There never is enough clip on trip , is there ?

Rose identified asR.‘Leda.’ This appears to actually be ‘Pink Leda,’ an old Damask rose, one of the ancient varieties of roses.
