Replacing water with gravel
Today we ’re chitchat Margaret Sobolewski ’s garden in Carlisle , Pennsylvania .
I institutionalize pictures of my garden to GPOD years ago , and I conceive I would send some photos of my late task , a rock / scree garden . My husband has a pilotless aircraft we used for the overhead blastoff . We have gardened on this land in Carlisle in south primal Pennsylvania , a former corn field , for 36 yr . Therock gardenused to be a stately pond . I decided it was too much upkeep and converted it to a rock garden three years ago . I take out the line drive and filled the 28 - inch - deep and 14 - foot - diam space with sand and crushed rock rubble , placed the stone , and added a crushed rock mulch . Joseph Tychonievich ’s Good Book on rock gardeningwas a great resource .
Then the fun began : teach about a whole Modern mathematical group of plants . These are miniature gem that require sharp-worded drain and are mostly available through mail order . I join the Delaware Valley chapter of theNorth American Rock Garden Societyto learn from experts and get some fantastic plant and advice from them . About 10 % of the plants have decease . I establish unexampled treasure each spring . It ’s very much trial and error — and very broken maintenance .

Thickly plantedperennialsand shrubs make a lush backdrop for the former pond turned into a rock candy garden .
Filling the former pond with Baroness Dudevant and gravel furnish the tiny rock garden gems the splendid drainage they need to thrive .
