entering into the garden last summer
Winter is the time to ruminate on what worked and did n’t work from last year ’s veggie garden and what we might do differently . I always take the air around at the death of the season in the fall and write notes on my phone about each variety and then transplant them to my computer to help oneself my pea brainiac ( which seems to be cringe ) think of matter for the next time of year . By write note I can refer back the following yr . I utilize to keep note in a petty notebook computer but now do it electronically ( I ’ve made it to the 21st century ! ) Either way work - the point is to observe and write down what happened . My greenback are specific for this retiring time of year and my garden , not inevitably true for all season or gardens .
HERE ARE THE PRO AND CON OF NEW VARIETIES I tried !

Entrance into the garden last summer
CONS - Let ’s get here . Why not ? That path we can end this post on a good notation .
Cape Gooseberries - I seem to be a sucker for anything that has the name ‘ Charles Edward Berry ’ in it although it is not relate to berries but rather it is in the tomatillo family but purportedly unfermented . What a wastefulness of prison term and water for me this past time of year . I had high-pitched Bob Hope for them but they were a dud . Wo n’t develop them again .
Potatoes - Yukon Jackvariety - harvested mostly teeny weenie spuds - the size of my thumbnail ! Next year , I ’ll corrupt farmers market smorgasbord and not grow any potatoes .
Watermelon - Anguriavariety- gratifying but only got two from two plants . Now I ’ve grown watermelon before and did better but not this year . Not deserving the water .
7082 cucumber - Not terribly productive - won’t originate again .
TOMATOES - Quite a few tomatoes did marvelously but a few were duds and these were all the new duds for me last season . I will brush up all the tomatoes in another Emily Post but read on for the turkey ( at least for me ):
Giant Green - Didn’t affair when I harvested them but they were always schmaltzy although sweet . Also not many . Wo n’t grow again .
Lilian ’s Yellow - they were nice - all two of them . With the cost of water , I require more than two per time of year .
Blush Plum - not expectant taste . Just ok and I need superior preference to grow in my garden . There are several Blush tomato plant varieties but this one is calledBlush Plumfrom Restoration Seeds . I ’ll pass next time of year .
Honking Black Cherry - Nothing honking about it . Just normal size Black Cherry and not as productive as the original variety . No go .
PROS - I really had a heavy season last twelvemonth but you might now get it from my banknote above . So let me praise the NEW winners from last season .
veggie
Purple Kohlrabi - what a great veggie ! Besides being tasty it is very beautiful and see like a infinite ship - way of life coolheaded . I used it in a vegetable gratin and it was very tasty . My friend Lava recite me they were good and she was right . I will growmorenext year .
Cauliflower - Never grew this before and what a dainty surprise ! Both Cheddar ( orange ) and white potpourri were very productive , no bugs and because I had two different varieties , I had two dissimilar harvesting time which meant I did n’t get all of them at one metre - a bonus ! The Armerican cheddar ripens sooner . I never looked at the germ mail boat to see crop times till later on . Nice surprisal . Will grow again .
Salmonberry - Only in its 2nd season , I think I lost it over last wintertime but it came back . Hopefully it will survive again this coming season and give rise berries !
Badger Flame Beet - What a expectant Beta vulgaris ! Adefinite winner – orangish outdoors and yellow-bellied inside - Almost too beautiful to consume . It has with child flavor . Will plant again !
Espelette black pepper - Super prolific ! A med sizing fragile bulwark red white pepper with medium heat first followed by a touch of fragrance . I once got a jar of Espelette powder ( from France ) and it was not nigh as blistering so I suppose it bet on the growing season . I spring up it to make powder . A definite keeper but have enough powder for an army .
Habanada black pepper - A small sugared orange Piper nigrum like the Habanero but with NO heat . Two plant gave me more than I needed . Will grow again .
Petite Marseilles - A small mellifluous jaundiced thin walled white pepper that I grew in a pot that did not bring out a lot but might be worth a retry this yr .
TOMATOES - I grow 27 plants last class of which many are repeats so these are the only novel varieties that were outstanding
Ruthje cherry tomato - hails from Germany and my friend Lava differentiate me about how good they were and she is right ! I willDEFINITELY GROWthese again . They were a super sweet cerise tomato plant that is as mellisonant as Sungold . Not many tomatoes can say that .
Black Sea Man tomato - Wonderful black tomato - full of favour with earthy partial tone . Reminds me of Black Krim , only way of life more productive . A success !
NEITHER GOOD OR speculative
HONEYBERRIES - Ok , I always want to grow blueberries but they need acidic grease which we do not have here in the sou'-west . Our soil is very alkaline . So I read that honeyberries ( which calculate like a elongate blueberry and taste similar ) , do n’t call for acidulous filth and can handle the cold-blooded winters . So I got two PLANTS and they were not happy . Did n’t die but did n’t do well either so the finding of fact is out on them . Hopefully they will survive our winter and do well next time of year . The verdict is out on these but I hope they will make a comeback !
