The Trestle Picnic Table – A New Twist On An Old Classic
Looking to add more outside seats for future farm - to - table dinners , we started to look at picnic tables as an option . When it amount to true outdoor seating , they certainly are one of the loose solutions .
But let ’s face up it , most picnic tables are n’t incisively build with a more pleasing design in mind . Or , for that issue , to sit down comfortably at either . For most designs , the bind bench seating always seems difficult to accede and exit . specially when others are already sitting down at the table .
Further complicating matter is the bulky size of most table make them hard to store for wintertime . The bench and tabular array jazz group together can really take up a lot of place .

In summation to those drawbacks , there is the progeny of sturdiness . More than once in my life I ’ve had the pleasure of sitting down at a wobbly picnic table . All the while wondering if it was going to collapse underneath me !
With that in mind , we decided to see if we could fare up with a proficient design for our picnic table at the farm . One that would be sturdy , strong , easy to use and stock – and look a little more unique and refined too .
So once again , we turned to two of our favorite hard and sparing construction materials , the 2×4 and the 2×6 . They simply are unvanquishable when it comes to loaning sturdiness to any of our projects .

rather of using a typical picnic table bracing design , we adjudicate to think a little outside of the box . In the process , we adjudicate to unite a traditional duck soup table with a trestle - trend base .
After all , it ’s hard to gravel the unbelievable intensity of trestle - dash construction . But not only is it potent , it also adds so much more interest and beauty to the base . And as an added welfare , it set aside for a lot more leg room under the table as well !
I have to say it change by reversal out to be one of our favorite project of all metre . The table is just improbably unassailable . And with the slide in benches , it looks so much more unique and elegant than a run - of - the mill , everyday picnic table .

In fact , it aboveboard looks dainty enough to serve as a table indoors or outside ! We ’ll take you through the building cognitive operation below , but for those who do want accomplished plans , they are now available in our Etsy shop as an inst download : Trestle Table Picnic Plans
Here is a smell at how the whole mesa go together :
you’re able to work up the trestle walkover table from just ( 6 ) 2 x 4 x 8 ’s and ( 4 ) 2 x 6 x 12 ’s . The benches are easy to work up as well , using just ( 3 ) 2 x 4 x 10 ’s for each terrace .

The trestle base leg utilise a post and beam - mode to connect together . The pass through hole for the beam is make simply by leaving a quad between 2 x 4 ’s as you work up , and not with fancy tools .
To get together , you dewy-eyed slew the 2 x 6 “ beam ” through the open one-armed bandit on each trestle base . It create a base that is super stiff and wo n’t careen . Even before you attach a few piece of tail on each oddment to secure the flip through shaft !
Once the base is together , the only chore left is securing the 2 x 6 boards to the top . For ours , we go away about 1/2″ column inch between boards for the on-key “ picnic tabular array ” facial expression . You could also keep the boards close up together to make a more traditional table top .

Last but not least was the issue of the seating room for the table . Although many picnic table designs use tush that impound to the table , we prefer for 2 x 4 bench that slide under the board when not in use .
Not only are they strong and sturdy , they make depot a breeze . Even better , they are easy to get in and out of . Something that can be quite difficult with most picnic tables .
