turnip are n’t tantalizing . They ’re downright pedestrian and often overlooked . I ’ve grown them off and on for days , just because I like the way they farm . They used to be a complete mystery to me … and not at all something I revel . Now I ’m starting to care them , however . A few nights ago , Rachel saute some sliced turnips and pork barrel loin – delicious . shedding aid take aside the bitterness , as does grow them quickly with good wet .
Reasons to grow turnips are multiple . Being yet another genus Brassica ( is it just me or is this like … “ BrassicaMonth ” here atFlorida Survival Gardening ? ) , they ’re quite near for you . They’re also very leisurely to grow . They can be used to fatten hogs , they grow in the winter , they keep the earth covered , and they bet pretty . Additionally , they store well , can be harvested over a seemly amount of season , and the greens are a good veg all on their own . utter of that : some turnip varieties are grown only for their leaves . If you ’d like roots , too , check that you did n’t grease one’s palms that type of seminal fluid . The antecedent of the “ leafage ” varieties of turnip are woody and unworthy .
I plant my turnip in the tardy fall via propagate them over upset dirt . I then skim and irrigate them in . If you ’re plant a modest space , just found the seeds at a nice spatial arrangement . I favor vomit them , of course of study , but you may have other , more neurotic , preferences . They total up in a week or so and grow rapidly . I tend to be able to pull my first turnips in perhaps two months or so . The harvest does n’t usually happen all at once . I usually get a few former monster , succeed by a stream of turnips hitting crop size for workweek and weeks after that .

Go ahead . embed some turnips . And if you do n’t like them , feed them to your animals . Or saute them in garlic butter . That fixes everything .
( BTW , Brassica rapa get additional points for being a high - calorie winter staple . Even if they are n’t the most delicious thing in the human race – they could keep you full during a clangor . )
