Six on Saturday. The Day of the Triffids.
My posts are capture like buses ; foresighted gaps then they all hail together . But I could n’t let another day go by without fete my triffid . Eight years ago I grease one’s palms a flora ofBeschorneria yuccoides . I did n’t have in high spirits hopes for it because it comes from Mexico and it is not dependably hardy . But I establish it a south facing wall and hop for the good . It is well named because the plant looks like a large yucca and is quite architectural . But this yr it surprised me by bring out a flower spike which spring up and grow . It is quite brilliant and I sha n’t be surprised if it starts attacking us as we go past it as it depend quite menacing .
It grow from rosette of glaucous , spiky foliage .
It looks as if some unhinged professor has been at work in this part of the garden , because not only do I have a triffid , but also giant hostas which are so Brobdingnagian they bet as if they have been genetically modified .

Hosta‘Sum and Substance ’ is smashing for pots as it has such presence and it has leathery leafage which are n’t quite so attractive to molluscs . I have to add that I have grown it before in a pot and never got it to look like these . I am count after them for my boy for reasons which I will go into another time . Readers of my blog may remember the Wiley Post I have write about his fabulousjetty gardenand his greenest of greenfingers . We wo n’t be return there as Bertie and Beatrice have moved on which is lamentable in some fashion as it was unique . But now they are make a new garden , and you could reckon upon it that it is exciting and unparalleled in quite a dissimilar way ; and it will be arresting . They have take on most of their plants but I have been left care for these two monsters . Unlike Bertie , I am not disposed to go out at night with a torch and there is no river to throw the snails into . So I do care about them , but so far , they are fine .
For my telephone number three I would wish to partake a slight tree diagram which I am peculiarly partial of ; it isCornus alternifolia , commonly known as the Pagoda tree . It is such an elegant shape with layered branches , little variegated leaves and white-hot peak . It is similar to the Wedding Cake tree , Cornus controversawhich has large leaves and grows into a larger tree , I have a modest one of these but the wretched Muntjac deer has graze on the branch on one side ruin its elegant appearance . But this short Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree is safe as it lives nearer to the house by the belittled pond .
rise nearby and make a endearing line is the nonpareil Forest Pansy , Cercis canadensis . I love the this Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree and I am very envious of my daughter who has found one with weeping form .

I wish having different sorts of foliage beat my small pool .
Whilst we are talking foliage I must partake a lovely form of berberis which you do n’t often find . It has tiny yellow flowers but you do n’t arise the blueish barberry for its blossom . The dusty blue leave-taking are really striking . They are a great transparency for sensationalistic flowers , in this case the daisy flowers ofAnthemis tinctoria‘E.C.Buxton’ . Rosa‘Sally Holmes ’ acquire alongside it .
late I was utter about my love of brown flowers and I got the touch that some of my fellow bloggers mean that my idea of a brown bed is a flake weird . But what do you palpate about grey bloom ? Last week I had a garden baseball club inflict my garden and closely everyone asked me about this little grey sweetheart .

I rise ‘ awe-inspiring Grey ’ poppy for the first time last year and I was daze by it . It is an easygoing scattering on the earth annual and several seed companies offer it now . It comes out in a variety of slate grey , pearly greyness and even a dusky pinko . Some of them are double , some single , but all are gorgeous . To see this poppy is to want it .
So there we have my Six on Saturday . And it all came courtesy of my triffid which would n’t allow me to let it go unrecorded . Do visit thePropagatorwho hosts this meme . You might not find triffids but you will descend across lots of June dish displayed by all his eager followers .

I ’m happy to see your web log posts whenever they turn up 😉 Your Beschorneria has performed better than mine , which has done precisely nothing ( other than failing to really die ) . I surmise mine gets far too little sun as it was gradually fill in by other plant life over the row of the years since it was plant . I suppose I should move it . I sow seed of that same ‘ Amazing Grey ’ poppy last wintertime but got not a individual seedling , which I ’m break down to find fault on our pathetically low rainfall rather than the nurseryman ’s inattention . Your Tree are dramatic .
Those genus Hosta looks as if they are on steroid Chloris . Oh it ’s sad that you will not be visiting the jetty garden again but no doubt Bertie and Beatrice will have much fun creating a new garden and will produce an evenly wizard distance . A beautiful poppy . I bought some come in the spring but then forget to sow it so I suppose it will have to await for another year 😢 I ’m start out pleasure from my self - seed ‘ Lauren ’s Grape ’ poppies at the moment .
Wow , that IS exciting ! Something in the grunge ? All the plants look very healthy , in reality . I am jealous of your poppies , as I ’ve never had success growing them . I might try some in pot next growing season . The colour of that poppy is really special , too .
