Ireland is a wonderland of magical bright green vistas—sometimes the sea is off in the distance—and other views feature unbelievable rock formations.

No wonder Ireland is called the Emerald Isle : it is unbelievably verdant green . One can not start out to imagine the many shadiness of green that there are until they go to Ireland and in reality see them — endless rolling Benny Hill of greenish — lavish fertile countryside appear as continuous patchwork quilts of coarse-textured greenery . It is truly like an spread storybook for a gardener or nature buff . When exact photos of this land , I found that one could not enamour the true beauty and essence on photographic film . Every turn in the road , elicited yet another ooh or aah or a interchangeable ecphonesis . ( My drive on the left side of very narrow-minded roads with hedgerow , sway rampart , and oncoming dealings of large vehicle such as tour buses and farm machinery also educed numerous exclamations , however they were often louder and not of an look up to nature ! ) My babe Donny , who was the chief “ nagivator ” riding shotgun , claimed daily that she was eating shrubbery or plunk it from her tooth and loudly told me to “ Mind the shrubbery ; beware the wall ; mind the walker ; mind the curb ; mind the car ; listen the cliff ” , etc . whenever she matte it necessary to do so .
One thing we looked for and used often were the “ ballad - bys ” which is what the Irish call a pull - off or survey pointedness ; they were often grease or rock with chuckhole and only big enough for one cable car ; however we put them to good utilisation . We used these to photograph prospect , from ocean to farmland , sheer rock cliffs , undulate J. J. Hill and fields of sheep , cows , horses , donkeys , sheep in the route , seals on rocks , thatched ceiling cottages and more .

keep in mind , that Ireland is an island palisade by water ; ocean , Laurus nobilis , and sound views were often in the space of the gullible pastoral scene , only make them more breathtaking . Since the state receive an tremendous amount of rainfall per anuum , we were rosy to have this type of lactating weather only once or twice . This precipitation is what makes the peat bogs crocked and the hedge so huge . The latter sometimes grow to 12 feet or so in height and draw the route , sometimes there are Oliver Stone wall behind them , sometimes not ; it is difficult to tell since they are so thick-skulled . They might have some ivy in them , there are vast numbers of blackberry and raspberries , some bramble , honeysuckle , viburnum , morn glories and unbelievably huge fuschias everywhere . I was a bite surprised to incur so many of the same or like plant that we have on our east seacoast in the USA .
Fields were full of grasses for grazing cattle , horse , donkeys and sheep . The native mourning band were plantain tree , yarrow , ego heal ( Prunella ) , sheep ’s sorrel , clover , blowball — just like in my backyard in Maryland . There was some edible corn develop ( for livestock , not human consumption ) , lots of hay , and grains like straw and oats , most especially barleycorn .
Peat bogs

In some low - lying arena where it look like battleground of grass or obscure filth , there were peat bog . If you get out and walk , you might sink down and get your foot smashed . In ironic area , peat was in grounds by strange rowing of fresh dug solid ground ; they utilize long , minute shovel to toil the peat and it get a log shape . Then they stack the peat logs in conical mound to dry and once they are dry hard they load them into black Maria .
Peat is cut from the bogs , then stacked and left to dry out . then loaded into wagons .
In the past , these peat logs were burn like firewood . Nowadays , the peat is process so it is cleaner and burn better . We had the pleasure of a woodstove in one of the cottage we stay in , and I build a peat fire every nighttime we were there . It had a endearing peaty smell , and we advert our laundry over the kitchen range on a specially design wheel , which had a block and a rope to rend it up so it dried rapidly as the heat rose . I still have some clothing with the smell .

What is n’t immature is very rockyAs green and voluptuary as this country is , its polar component is sway , mostly limestone . unlikely rock . John Rock like I have never attend anywhere — in many places there was rock-and-roll for as far as the center can see . In fiat to grow crop , the Irish people have cleared the res publica for thousands of years . There is so much rock , that it has been throng into walls that sometimes differentiate landed estate boundaries , however mostly it has been rate haphazardly as it was lift and stacked , so there are Harlan Stone walls after stone walls , running parallel , diagonally , and vertical across the landscape .
I found this much rock astonishing to lay eyes on . Out on the island of Inishmore ( one of the Aran Islands off the western coast ) , as we sat in veneration staring at these sempiternal megabucks of rock , our local driver ( and quite the Irish character ) , Thomas O’Toole told us that there are two things that the Irish do well : “ produce rock candy and drink Guiness ” . Which I would have to agree with wholeheartedly .
The Burren

One of the rockiest places is called the Burren and it will be the subject of my next situation . Although it is mainly rock-and-roll , there is an awesome amount of plant life found there and it is all challenging . So mark off out thenext installmentfor more careen and plants and photos of it all !
