Do you need seed starting mix? The answer may surprise you!

In short , no . I have been ejaculate starting for my garden for 30 + years and have stress many methods .

My potting stain mix is 3 part potting soil , 1 part perlite .

Seeds to be Germinated
Today I will be using these two types of Lycopersicon esculentum . Both of these are a favorite of mine and I seek to grow them every twelvemonth .
Costoluto Genoveseis a fantastic sauce Lycopersicon esculentum . It is yummy for eating too but this is my preferred tomato for creating myOven Roasted MarinaraSauce . I usually useSan Marzanowith the Costoluto .
The smaller tomato is calledCamp Joy Cherry , they come out to be about the size of a ping pong ball rather than a cherry red tomato and the flavor is tough to beat . Even my friends who swore by Sun Gold switched over to this one as their favorite once they tasted them .
Fill Containers
For this test , I am using recycled cleaned , and sanitized 6 - pack container . I fill 1 of each container with one of the seed starting mixes and one container I fill with my potting soil mixture .
I do n’t pre - moisten any mixtures , it is easier to fill up the containers when the mix is wry . I show how I safely moisten them after they are set .
Plant the Seeds
Just gently pressing them into the soil and check that they are continue is usually sufficient . Good seeded player to ground contact is needed for better germination .
Marking the Seed Containers
To keep running of which seed mixture you used it is wise to mark each one and ensure you note the name of the semen you planted .
I kept the Camp Joy seed on one side of the six - inner circle and the Costoluto Genovese on the other .
I am always reuse , I use plant mark that have come from plants I have purchased previously .
hygienise first with either a bleach - water solution or I keep a spray bottle of myhandy DIY cleanerin the greenhouse . See that billet for the recipe .
Water Your Seeds
Now that you have the source all planted it is time to get them water . you may spritz it with urine in a nebuliser bottle but I opt to bottom water .
Tepid or warm water is honest . I have an in or two in a large tray - comparable container . ( this one was reprocess from a gather , clean , and sanitized )
Place the 6 packs into the piss and let them absorb for 24 hours . Some wick up H2O faster than others but leave the full time to be sure they are effective and moistened .
As I say before warm water engage best , not too warm but just tender to the touch . Be monish that germ commence premix may need up to 72 hr to amply hydrate . I have found many of them to be hydrophobic ( immune to urine absorption ) .
Germinating Tomato Seeds
Place the six - packs in a warm , bright place and wait for the small seeds to bourgeon .
Right now it is still so stale I have them on my plant rack indoors under lights .
Once they germinate and get their second set of leaves I should be able to take them out to the greenhouse .
We are to have warm temp and passel of sunshine next week so they should do majuscule . Right now our night temps are getting down into the 20 ’s .
