Happy Monday , GPODers ! Today ’s photos are from Susan Merritt outside Atlanta , Georgia . This may search like an awfully long Emily Post to read on a Monday forenoon , but commit me , I retrieve you ’ll all find at least a little bit of yourself in Susan ’s gardening experience . I know I did . Read on …
Susan says,“I live in the Atlanta region ( actually Avondale Estates , an idyllic little burg – not a arm , but a townspeople – minutes from downtown Atlanta ) . I caught my gardening bug from my grandfather who had an Orange River grove , a vinery ( muscadine ) and raised Araucana chickens , Numida meleagris sloven , and homing pigeons on a quarter acre lot . I was his correct - hand little girl from the time I could walk .
My garden is my pride and joy ( 2nd only to my small grandson ) . It began as a blah suburban 1000 that has evolved into a refuge , a creative outlet , and a informant of endless pleasure . When life sentence throws me a bushel of lemons , my garden reminds me that stinker have cum and with a little nurture …

“ MY quarter - acre lot has two enormousMagnolia grandifloratrees – what we in the south used to call ‘ bull magnolias ’ , for good reason . They ’re lovely in someone else ’s railway yard . I do a pitched battle with them all year long – despicable browned leaf litter in the spring , increasing encroachment on available planting space , shade that is dense as midnight . The only saving grace is the privacy they afford . ( play you thought I ’d say the ‘ adorable efflorescence ’ . Those darn thing drop , too – just when you thought the leaves were all raked up . ) Their spreading branch are also convenient for obscure older car , dead bodies , the broken lawnmower , etc . 😉
“ The garden has become a tangible garden over a 27 - year period , despite – or perhaps because of – a net ton of error and a buy hunter ’s approach to plant and hardscape acquirement . Can you say ‘ Rocks for my birthday , please ’ or ‘ Yes , I ’m afraid this plant is dead – I ’ll take it off your hand for fifty cents ? ’ A match of years ago , I drop in at a moving sale in my neighbourhood and walked out with the charwoman ’s entire garden – stacks of industrial plant , terrace flag , set pool form , the work – for $ 200 . Oh , joy !
“ When my vegetable garden became too shady , it became a little private garden ( or it will be secret once the bargain evergreens actually get taller than me ) . Some of those plants were scavenge from the street after less affirmative gardeners tossed them out as togs .

My next labor – there is always a next undertaking – we gardeners will survive forever – is a real “ entrance ” on the driveway side of the property . Endless fun dreaming , plot , calculating the toll , and finding the highly skilled but laughably cheap declarer . My contrary philosophy from the beginning has been : plants first , hardscape last .
“ My depository library ofFine Gardeningmagazines – nearly the complete curing – are my inspiration and the source of 60 minutes of dream . Thanks so much for helping make it potential . ”
Oh , Susan , you ’re what I call a tangible gardener ( not that I remember there are fake gardeners … ) , and your garden is brilliant . Thanks so much for sharing it with us ! !
