One of the most crucial chores we execute every year in the garden actually has little to do with physical labor – but everything to do with making it more successful next year .
Each time of year , in mid - September , we take a little time to perform a garden review – walking through and jotting down the fact and thoughts of what worked well – what did n’t – and what we want to do next year .
twilight is a not bad time for a garden review because it ’s all still fresh in your mind . you may see and make notes of what pests attacked what and when – what you planted too much or too little of – and which varieties performed well – and which did n’t quite live up to your expectation .

It is easy to break up out the Italian Roaster from this hebdomad ’s picking of Piper nigrum
This flora has now rocketed to the top of our listing for capsicum pepper plant ! It is one of the first peppercorn we have pick now for the last two years – and only seems to get full as the year go on . In fact – our Italian Roaster plants are still loaded with huge peppers – some of which measure over 12″ farseeing !
The pepper start out firm and green and turn to a beautiful Bolshevik as they mature . Their thick walls make them dandy for overeat or for holding up well on the grill – and their balmy but sweet green bell - like taste is simply delicious .

The thick meaty texture of the Amish Paste Lycopersicon esculentum
The Amish Paste heirloom tomato has really become a champion in our garden as well – becoming our go - to tomato for making and canning our alimentary paste sauce , picante and salsa .
The stunner of the Amish Paste is that it keeps on producing well into the late fall – in fact , we pluck nearly 3/4 of a bushel yesterday – not bad for a late September picking ! The yield are meaty , firm and in high spirits in acidity – making them the perfect selection for canning .

The Chocolate Cherry Tomato
As far as cherry tomatoes go – the Chocolate Cherry was the clearly - contract winner . This heirloom assortment produced well both in the garden , and in our terrace planter at the house . It produced hundreds upon hundreds of perfectly round dark cherry - brown fruits that bristle with flavor .
They are arrant in salad , salsa – and were very soft to juice as well . One greenback – one or two plants may be more than enough – the filmy volume can be consuming ! We glean over 80 from one mature flora on a single twenty-four hours this past summertime .

The atomic carrots are majuscule for rest home - made slaw too !
These carrots were not only easygoing to produce – but their deep red color make them a conversation man ! They are also high in lycopene , making them a very levelheaded choice to grow as well . The Atomic Red performed really well in our raised beds , even through an super cockeyed early Spring and Summer . We love to tally them to salad for their great taste and color – but they are also the utter option for cooked carrot with their thick and meaty grain .
Happy Gardening ! – Jim and Mary
