When we garden , we establish a close relationship with every element : the plant life , the filth , and even the animate being that interact with them . And while some elements of this action are less - than - glamorous , the collaboration cultivated between the garden and gardener is one of pure beauty .   In the selection below , generator Maria Rodale talk about how only changing the way think about horticulture can open up a novel , magical world .

The following is an selection fromLove , Nature , Magicby Maria Rodale . It has been adapted for the WWW .

The Joy of Gardening: A Creative Collaboration

Dear Reader ,

I found Love , Nature , Magic in my garden . While weeding , in reality . I was trying to exterminate a flora called mugwort , a seemingly pestering plant that plays a star role in this record book . small did I know what a strange path mugwort would run me on once I decided to strain to listen to it .

horticulture ( or land , for that matter ) is not for the faint of heart . In my garden I come face - to - face with birthing , death , decay , slaying ( ! ) and mayhem , invasions , dope arm with poison and crisp weapon system . After a proficient mean solar day in the garden , I am contaminating , sweaty , scratched , and bitten and only in short satisfied because I have it away that this is a relationship that will not cease until I end , lay to rest in the earth to be eaten by the decomposers and fed to the roots of tree that will outlive all of us . And comment I did not even advert the atmospheric condition . Or the ticks . Or the rabbits and woodchucks .

Growing plant for food , beauty , and pleasure is a creative collaboration with the greatest artist of all — nature . It took me decades to memorize that I am not the one in ascendence , and the more I relax and pay attention to what everything in my garden desire , the happier we all are . It ’s not a war , it ’s a dance . It ’s not a competition , it ’s a partnership . It ’s not a race , it ’s a festival . It ’s not easy , but it ’s the variety of difficult that builds inviolable muscles and make something novel and wonderful . And is n’t that what we want to do in this public ? make something Modern and wonderful , promote everyone to live to their full potential and enjoy this unusual experience we call biography ? With a garden , we can create the world we want to see and live in . That , my friend , is wizardly .

Exploring the Magic: Shamanic Journeying

One day , afer a particularly frustrative bout in the garden trying to “ keep in line ” an “ invasion ” of mugwort , I decide to see if I could do a shamanic journeying to understand what , if anything , this flora was sample to put across to me.(A shamanic journey is a drug - free way of go inwards to try understanding of the out world by verbalize direct with purport in other realness . I ’ll explain more about journey in a moment or two . ) That experience was transformative . Fascinating . Illuminating . It made me want to journey to com- municate with all the other organism in my railway yard that irritate me , and that I needed or want to empathise better .

The musical theme for this account book amount from that experience . What if , I think , I combine my experience as a gardener , where my roots have spread and heighten and connected me to Earth , with what I have get wind as a wayfarer , where I have soared to other worlds? One of the things we learn when we travel is that the practiced way to honour the spirits who guide us is to listen and show that we heard their message . Writing a Bible matte up like the best way I could respect them .

It was exciting to cerebrate about compose that book , but terrorize to reckon sharing it with the earth . This was not the form of matter I felt well-to-do talking about with mass . Except my kids , and yes , they recall I ’m weird . But I ’m come too sure-enough to worry about what other people guess of me . The route start opening before me , and I could n’t help but play along to see where it led . The more I started talk with hoi polloi about shamanic journeys , the more they shared with me about their own similar experiences and deep curiosity . It was n’t that chilling after all .

Getting to Our Roots & Learning to Love

We all started in a garden . Whether you believe in the scriptural Garden of Eden or the theory of organic evolution ( or both ) , our roots are in nature , in learning about the world around us through the flora and animals that sustain us , the rock and roll and trees that shelter us , and the waters that quench our bodies and soul . If we can get over our fears and study to see nature as a supporter and ally , what is then possible? If we can metamorphose our annoyance with plants , animals , and insects we reckon as pestilence into honey and hold for them , how might our whole world vary ? Could we transform this dystopian mental dying spiral that has trapped so many people , changing it into a round of up evolution and cooperation ? Perhaps it ’s possible to course - correct our seeming environmental human plane clangour by learning to love those things that scare and annoy us .

We humans often seem trapped in a series of arguments that it find like no one will ever pull ahead . logical system and facts do n’t seem to matter . We lose trust in each other and in the systems that were created to seemingly hold up us . I decided to journey because I needed to know if there was another way . I was seem for answer to fulfill my own longing to bang , to understand , and to find hope .

Through shamanic journeying , I notice those things and more .

I now believe it ’s possible to make a unexampled Eden where knowledge is not a sin , desire is discern as part of our human purpose , and dear and understanding are the original benediction to be nourished and cultivated in the garden of our lives . I also trust we can create a place where diversity is celebrated and embraced as a beautiful gift from nature , because nature thrive on diversity .

It ’s easy to do it the obviously delightful part of nature , the plants and birds and other brute that have become our friends and delight us with their beauty — the rose wine , the tomatoes , the lilies of the field , the butterflies , the hummingbirds . Just like it ’s promiscuous to love our own family or people who calculate like us . But what about those organism that are hard to jazz ? The ones we attempt to kill off or eradicate ? The widow’s weeds , the pestilence , the invasives ? They may have significant things to learn us . What are we capable of read from them if we really listen ? I realized that I stood to learn the most from the plants and animal that foil and frightened me . And they were eager to help teach me .

This is where my adventure begins and what these stories explore .
