Late -flowering Snowdrops.
I know many fellow blogger are unable to empathize the snowdrop fixation , although the disease is catching and is infect more and more of us . I am always amused by gardeners who conceive that they will buy just one or two different 1 and then stop there . No prospect ; it is a slippery slope and those one or two will inevitably conduce you on down the Primrose Path . Or should I say Snowdrop Path .
I do agree with those of you who feel that a mass of ordinarynivalissnowdrops ca n’t be improved upon . snowdrop are n’t aboriginal to this state , but there are stack of Mrs. Henry Wood in Suffolk where they have become naturalised . There is a wood not far from where I live which is covered in a large , ahead of time - flowering form ofnivalisand it is a wonderful sight in February .

But snowdrops do n’t all wait the same and it is lovely to have some different one and also some to reach out the season .
Last Friday I drop dead on what was believably one of the last wood anemone walks of the time of year at Anglesey Abbey , near Cambridge . If you require to go on one of these walks next twelvemonth , they begin at 2 p.m. and it is best to book in advance . It is free , and it is a wonderful mode to see the 270 fantastic varieties of snowdrops growing there . You are not allow to walk along the snowdrop path unaccompanied , which is graspable . I always think that gardeners are nice masses , but there are greedy and unscrupulous ones who steal worthful plants , so they have to be protect . It is interesting to walk along with the Assistant Head Gardener , David Jordan and have an informative talk as you go . The only problem is , photos have to be snatch , as there are always people contract up behind you , raring to get on . I want to show you a few picture which will surely persuade you that snowdrops do n’t all expect the same . First my best-loved snowdrop which I will certainly be raiding my piggy bank for next year , because I finger my aliveness is really not stark without it . The incomparable and instantly recognisable ‘ Diggory ’ .
Galanthus‘Wendy ’s Gold ’ has been on my indirect request lean for a tenacious time , but another one with yellow-bellied ovary is ‘ Spindlestone Surprise ’ which seems to make lovely big clumps . It is a cross between ‘ nivalis’and ‘ plicatus’and appeared in Northumberland where quite a few yellow snowdrops originated .

If you are still not convinced that snowdrops can look very dissimilar , here are a duad of very eldritch unity . I do n’t call back I will be adding them to my appeal .
I have the lovely ‘ Trym ’ which is such a pretty shape with gullible splashes on the outer petal . There are several seedling which came fromGalanthus plicatus‘Trym ’ such as ‘ Trymlet ’ and this pretty ‘ Trimmling ’

There are so many endearing snowdrop here , so I will just chose three more which are all gorgeous . I have long wanted a endearing all whitened ‘ Poculiform ’ snowdrop which you’re able to see in the next pic . I love the 2nd one ‘ Alison Hilary ’ with the strong green markings on the privileged section and the last one ‘ Jessica ’ is very pretty , and I put it in for Jessica atRustyDuckblog .
Galanthus ‘ Magnet ’
The next one ‘ Ikariae ’ spreads into big clump . It has lovely apple unripe leaves .

I love this next one which is called suitably enoughGalanthus nivalis‘Greenish ’ . Some of the virescent snowdrops are quite difficult to grow but this is gentle .

In my garden the very last snowdrop to flower isGalanthus plicatus . It bloom correctly through March . It makes bad clumps of sodding flowers . ‘Plicatus ‘ means pleated and the wide leaves are very distinctive . Galanthus plicatushas been hybridised with other snowdrops to make many new ones . It come from Turkey and was brought to this state by soldiers give from the Crimean War .

For those of you who do n’t stomach from ‘ White Fever ’ , and have read so far , I rationalise and I assure you that this is the last wood anemone post and I wo n’t name them again until October whenGalanthus reginae - olgaewill be in bloom . If talk about Anemone quinquefolia seems endless , it is because with heedful choosing you’re able to , and I do , have snowdrops in blooming for six month of the year .

You ca n’t have too many posts about snowdrops ! Being able to hold out the Anemone quinquefolia season by buy “ specials ” makes it all worth while I remember . I ’m so happy you say that G “ Spindlestone Surprise bulks up well , I bought one bulb last year and have two flowers this year , so here ’s hoping for future long time .
Gorgeous Snowdrops ! I relish them – in person and in photograph . But I would n’t say I have an obssession . More in all likelihood , I have a Crocus obssession . I could stare at just about any Crocus flower for hour , and I so enjoy the mode they unfold to the sunlight and skinny at night . Sigh .
you could post about snowdrop ad infinitum as far I ’m concerned Chloris . I ca n’t say that either ‘ Moses Basket ’ or the threefold claw - like one do it for me on first mass but their mothers must make out them . I think you should be able to receive ’ Diggory now without break the piggy bank 🙂

They are undeniably very pretty . As someone who has plant obsession of her own ( Grevillea being just one ) , I ’d be the last to criticize . What ’s most surprising to this southerly Californian is how epidemic the snowdrop compulsion is in the UK – I ca n’t think of any flora that has such a pervasive impingement of gardeners here .
I am ashamed to confess that I am one of these fellow bloggers ineffective to understand the snowdrop compulsion . However , I have a very good ( I cogitate it is very sound ) excuse . snowdrop are not really suitable to our mood . They really are plants for places with farseeing springs . In our climate their blossom season is very short . Most year , the moment they at long last come out it apace have too hot for them . I say I would prepare a gustation for them if they bloomed for weeks on conclusion .
I had no mind that there were so many varieties of snowdrops and each with just a insidious remainder . I really must endeavor to visit Anglesey Abbey this year as it is not too far from me …
