The Geothermal Development Company ( GDC ) has struck steam at the Baringo - Silali Geothermal Project .
The fresh well at Paka Field , about 260 km nor'-west of the capital Nairobi , is the first to be drilled in the geothermic rich neighborhood . It will put Kenya on the map as one of the most robust geothermic countries in the macrocosm .
A discharging well at the Paka geothermal field

“ This is an exciting time for GDC and Kenya , ” pronounce the Managing Director and CEO , Eng . Johnson P. Ole Nchoe . “ This well is a game - auto-changer . It has proved the viability of the Paka geothermal sphere . It ’s also ushering Kenya into an age of vivacious geothermal zip . ”
The achiever , barely two years after works begin in the force field , is a major boost in GDC ’s pursuit to furnish Kenya with low-priced and honest energy . Other geothermic fields in Kenya are in Olkaria and Menengai .
The first phase of the Baringo – Silali Geothermal Project targets to break 300 MW spread in three geothermic expanse namely Korosi , Paka and Silali .

“ I ’m happy that at GDC we are sharply expanding energy opportunity for Kenya . Our dedication is to ensure well-timed delivery of renewable energy project that will greatly back the country ’s development vision , ” the CEO said in an audience .
The CEO noted that all major economies thrive because of access to abundant energy . geothermic , he take down , will power Kenya into a vibrant future of great industrial and societal development .
And to witness the dramatic discharging of the well was a delegation from the project development partner – Kfw of Germany . The spouse was also on a task inspection mission . Other developing spouse in this project admit the Geothermal Risk Mitigation Fund ( GRMF ) , JICA and UNEP .
“ The success of the drilling of the well is exciting . Paka is no - longer a outlook but a flying field . We will continue to support GDC in the drilling cognitive operation to ensure that Kenya rein in her geothermal vim which is in raft , ” said Mr Wesely Vargas , the kfw Senior Technical Expert for Geothermal .

Kfw has financed steam field exploitation for about 300MW and GDC will provide counterpart funding . The financing also includes route meshwork and an intricate piss reticulation organisation for practice operations . Besides , in this projection , GDC has incorporated a robust community water supply program with 20 watering points for domestic and farm animal utilisation .
“ The success of the project is also critical to the BIG 4 agenda . Renewable and low-cost energy from geothermal will boost all the sector of the thriftiness . This is a big milestone for Kenya , ” Eng . Nchoe enthused .
