Irresistible Little Irises
The gnome irises which usually bloom afterwards in February have all follow out too soon this year . The first to bloom is as usualIris danfordiaein lovely deep yellow . If you peer down its pharynx you could see it has light-green spots on its tonsils . You have to buy unexampled ace each year because like the jumbo lily : Cardiocrinum giganteumthe bulbs separate up into tiny non - flowering bulbil . I suppose you could get these on and indeed I have done this with the elephantine lily but I have never bothered with the iris they are so tatty to buy .
I know the compounding of pale bluing and sensationalistic with dark imperial point onIrisKatharine Hodgkin . It is a cross betweenIris danfordiaeand the tough littleIris histrioides . It is beautiful and with a routine of tender care you’re able to keep it going for several years .
A very like iris has been bred with the same parents . It isIris histrioidesSheila Ann Germaney . It has a much narrower icteric strip and does n’t have the dark spots . It is just as beautiful though . There is some discombobulation about the ancestry of these two iris . Some authority say they must be the offspring ofIris histrioidesand the frail pale yellowIris winogradowii .

Iris reticulatawhich means the netted iris because it has a unchewable nett round the incandescent lamp number in many endearing shades of blue and purpleness . They all have lovely markings on the falls . I make out the abstruse wine-coloured colouration ofIris reticulata‘Pauline ’ with the snowy and purple tips to the ends of the falls .
My pet isIris reticulata‘Halkis ’ . This beauty was find in 1990 in Turkey . It has scented flowers and a acquire combining of sky blue with inky-black purple falls with a yellow jiffy .
Most of these adorable irises are widely available , although ‘ Halkis ’ may take a number of search out . One of the most normally found is the lovelyIris‘Harmony ’ which is such a gorgeous shade of bluing .

If you desire your dwarf iris to come back yr after year it is essential that they have in force drainage and a semi - shaded spot . I give them plenty of gravel mixed up with their soil . They must be embed deep to do well and I give them a gamey potassium hydroxide plant food when they have wind up flowering . They are also great for jackpot as many of them are fine perfume and you do n’t always desire to get on your hand and knees to sniff them in February .

I think Katherine Hodgkin was my favorite until I saw Halkis . It ’s on my inclination to taste to establish them on the slop bank where hopefully they will have sufficient drain .
Mine are not yet showing colour Chloris so it ’s most cheering to see yours up and about . I have come down for ‘ Halkis ’ which I ’ve not come across before . It ’s gone straight on the wish list 🙂
I ’ve been remember that I need to try some of the smaller Iris , like I. reticulata . After check your ‘ Halkis , ’ I mean I MUST essay them next twelvemonth .

I do n’t turn iris diaphragm in the gardens here ( something that really should be remedied as I have the consummate suspicious maculation for them , a corner of the garden that I ’m slowly developing ) but I have the pleasure of view wads of iris diaphragm bloom in the walled garden at Capel Manor … and you ’re right , they are an recherche and uplifting passel !
