It is with bully gloominess that we declare the passing of Matthew Stein , author , environmentalist , MIT - train engineer , green detergent builder , and beloved member of the Chelsea Green family . In 2000 Matthew release his first book with Chelsea Green , When Technology Fails : A Manual for Self - Reliance and Planetary Survival . Beyond providing valuable information on keeping one ’s self and loved ones safe in the event of crisis , Matthew ’s Christian Bible display a profound knowingness of the turbulence that would do in the twenty - first century : the threat of declining oil output and the ravages of climate change and ecological decay . Rather than resign himself to these disturbing trends , Matthew sought to provide friends , neighbour , and the community at large with the peter they need to endure and thrive , and to bring about a more sustainable way of aliveness . Matthew not only wrote about wilderness survival and the importance of preserving our environment , he practice what he preached . grow up in Burlington , Vermont , he was an avid hunter , fisher , backpacker , careen mounter , and mountaineer , and later in biography he volunteered for Sierra Regional Ski for Light , guiding blind skier and tramp . After graduate from MIT with a degree in mechanically skillful technology , Matthew founded Stein Design and Construction , where he build hurricane - tolerant , vigour - effective , and environmentally well-disposed homes . He also designed water filtration machine , solar roofing panels , aesculapian bacterial filter , and other consumer production intended to increase quality of life and understate our collective environmental impact .
