In this scout , we ’ll dive into how to like for dumb cane , but as I ’ve mentioned , it really is n’t unmanageable . Here ’s what I ’ll cover :
What You’ll Learn
There ’s just one thing that might make you want to reconsider picking up a dumb cane for your home :
They ’re highly toxic to humans and animals if ingested , and the sap can irritate the pelt and eyes .
If you have curious toddlers or PET , maybestick to that fiddle - foliage figafter all . We ’ll talk more about this below .

Cultivation and History
Plants in theDieffenbachiagenus are native to the Caribbean , and South and Central America .
They have tame in Sri Lanka , Singapore , Malaysia , Samoa , and various islands of the South Pacific , include Hawaii and Fiji .
The genus was namedDieffenbachiaby noted Austrian plant scientist and head of the Austrian Botanical Gardens , Heinrich Wilhelm Schott , after his head nurseryman Joseph Dieffenbach .

It was given the coarse name “ dumb cane ” because of the affect it has if any part of the plant life is ingested .
The plant contains calcium oxalate quartz throughout its leaves , stems , and solution .
If assimilate , the crystals cause the body to discharge histamine , which result in jut of the mouth and pharynx . This can cause breathing difficulties and in severe typesetter’s case may mayhap lead to dying .

The irritation of the vocal corduroys and pharynx can also render the eater deaf-and-dumb person .
There have even been case ofpeople call for tracheostomiesto help them breathe after taking a nibble from this toxicant specimen .
The oxalate crystals can be so virile that simply touching a cut bow to one ’s lips can cause swelling . Symptoms start within minutes and can last for days .

Discovery of this property led to a dark , tragical past for this plant . Horrifyingly , it was used to punish Black slave in the Caribbean , and some slaves take it as a mode to commit suicide . It was also used at least once to hush up a tourist court witness .
In Brazil , it was reckon to cause sterility .
Michael G. Kenny , Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at Simon Fraser University , write in theSocial History of Medicine ( Volume 15)that Nazi SS leader Heinrich Himmler propose using extracts of the plant to sterilize “ racially undesirable war prisoner . ”

In barren contrast , many refinement throughout history have used the ascendent , stem , and leaf of dumb cane medicinally as a shape of giving birth command and to treat dropsy , excitement , gout , and intimate dysfunction .
More latterly , it became a favourite home decor component set about in the Victorian era .
There are 135 known species in theDieffenbachiagenus , though not all are grown as houseplant .

The metal money you ’ll most usually see in home base areD. amoena , D. bowmannii , D. picta , D. maculata , andD. seguine .
They roam in size of it from two to 10 feet magniloquent and two to three feet wide , depending on the form . The leaves are oval-shaped in shape , and can grow up to 10 column inch long .
Leaf shape may be substantial fleeceable or mottled , with spots or patches of blanched , emollient , or sensationalistic .

The distinctive leaf design have earned it the alternate name of leopard lily .
inflorescence is rarified if originate indoors , but under the right condition , plants can produce showy white blossoms that resemble acalla lily – which is not surprising , since they come from the same kinsfolk , Araceae .
If pollinated , these are followed by shining red fruit .

Over time the humiliated leaves cast off , exposing the shank , which looks standardized to sugar cane .
As the leaves drop , lead just the top foliation in place , the plant begin to resemble a small thenar tree .
A Note of Caution:
In case the monition above did n’t tip you off : watch out ! This industrial plant is toxic to cats and dog-iron , and can cause drooling , disgorgement , difficulty swallowing , or even death .
homo should take maintenance , as well . Keep plant forth from young children who wish to put things in their mouth .
The sap can irritate the tegument and eyes . Wear gloves , foresightful sleeves , and eye protection when working with this works , to be on the safe side , and stave off touching your face .

Propagation
There are several ways to propagate dumb cane at home , including tune layering , via base cuttings , and by division .
When you cut the roots , stems , or foliation , make certain to embark on with a clean knife or clippers , and clean your creature thoroughly afterwards .
wash off them in scoop and weewee or rub them with a material dunk in a 10:1 mix of water and bleaching agent , to forestall the spreading of disease and to ensure that you do n’t by chance come in contact with the sap .

All propagation should be done in the springiness or other summer .
From Air Layering
airwave layering is the cognitive operation of reach the stem of your dumb cane plant to further roots to form and then divide the new growth from the exist plant life .
If your flora has a central stem that ’s at least a foot tall , you’re able to broadcast layer it to produce a unexampled works .
Gather some clear plastic – a Imperial gallon - size drivel bag works well ; zippo ties , twist link , or drawing string ; a knifelike , sporty knife ; a toothpick , a cotton swob or small brush , rooting hormone powder or colloidal gel ; and sphagnum moss , and get quick to lick .

You may also need a pair of clipper or scissors , so keep some handy .
If the stem is already exposed because the flora has neglect its lower folio , choose a spotlight about midway up the stem to make your swing .
If not , cut away the leaves from the center of the radical using a pair of clippers so you have clean-cut quad to work with .

You need about three inches of leafage - free space . Leave the foliage above and below the cut stem in place .
While you do n’t require to be exact , your cut should be place at least four inch from the tip of the stem .
Take your sharp , unclouded tongue and make a 45 - degree incision at an up slant , cut just halfway through the bow where you want the new roots to form .

Then enforce rooting hormone to the inside of the gash with a little brush or cotton mop .
Bonide Bontone II Rooting Powder
Bontone II Rooting Powder , available at Arbico Organics , has always been a reliable selection for me .

Then , wedge a toothpick horizontally into the cut to ensure it does n’t cure and close over before mould roots . Clip away the surplus duration of the toothpick .
Dip your sphagnum moss in water and then wring it out . Pack the moss around the track stem so that it ’s completely cover all the style around . You should have at least two inches of moss both above and below the slice .
Wrap the plastic around the moss to hold it in home , and secure it with ZIP code ties , twist ties , or twine at the top and bottom .

Place the plant in bright , indirect luminousness and water as you would normally . reach the plastic now and then to make certain the moss is still moist . If not , pour in a little piddle or mist the moss with a spray bottle .
After about six week or so , you should see roots filling in around the moss . But do n’t care too much if you do n’t yet – it can take up to three months for raw roots to form .
When you could see the new root , it ’s time to divide your new verdure from the existing industrial plant .

Cut the top of the plant life off just below the charge card using a knife or clippers . Remove the plastic , moss , and toothpick , and industrial plant as you would a transplanting ( described below ) .
you could discard the original industrial plant , but if you keep watering it and keep it in collateral sunlight , it will usually place up new shoots from the base .
Trim the stem back to an inch or so above the filth to advance new , bushy growth . Water when the top inch of soil becomes dry .

From Stem Cuttings
you may also propagateDieffenbachiaplants via stem cuttings .
This method is easiest if your industrial plant has dropped its humble leaves and the stem is expose , but you could also curve away existing leaves to get at the root .
Each segment that you cut needs to have at least one lot ( technically called a node ) , which is where the folio were attached to the plant .

The goal is to take a few cuttings that are about two or three column inch long . count on the distance of the stem , you may be capable to snip multiple pieces for transplantation .
practice a acuate , clean knife or clippers to slue discussion section of the stem . lead a few leaves attached to the top discussion section if you want . While cuttings do n’t need foliage to take root , this can step on it thing up a little .
Dip the bottom end of each cutting in take root endocrine .

Tank ’s Pro Coco - Soil Potting Mix
locate the stem upright in potting grime – I apply cooler ’s Pro Coco - Soil Potting Mix , available at Arbico Organics – and bury it , with about half of the clipping below the dirt .
To make thing easier , I rout my cuttings directly in the pot I intend to grow the plant in , but you could use a irregular container if you favor .

irrigate the carving and secure that the soil stays moist as they shoot . Place them in an area where they can love indirect sunlight .
As with melodic phrase layering , you may also keep the original flora pulpit and it will commit up new sprouts if you keep water it and keep it in an surface area with collateral sun .
After one or two month , you should see new growth emerging from the top of your press cutting , followed by leafage .

Cuttings from lower down the stem take longer to root than ones bring from high up . When they have two or three leaves , you may transplant them .
By Division
If you have a mute cane plant with a unmarried stem , you ca n’t divide it . This method only works if you have a plant with several theme growing from a single beginning bollock .
Dividing is a utilitarian style to propagate a slow cane , but it is also a good idea if your plant starts have too big for your space or outgrowing its container .
To do this , gently remove the entire plant from its container by tipping it sidewise and work a clean knife carefully around the margin of the pot . Grasp the plant around the base of the stem turn and take it from the pot .

Now , look for a billet to split the plant . You require to obtain a station where there is a natural segmentation with roots entire among the stem turn , and head off splitting stems that are growing very close together .
cleanse away as much of the soil as you could to expose the roots and lightly tug the sections apart as much as potential .
If the roots are n’t coming apart cleanly ( and they belike wo n’t ) , just use a clean knife or little see to trend the rest of the roots apart . Trim out any roots that are soft and mushy or juiceless and brittle .

Replace one-half of the plant in the original container so that it is growing at the same deepness that it was before . impart new potting dirt to secure it in place .
Plant the 2d section as you would a transplant .

Transplanting and Repotting
Ready to put your stock - boughtDieffenbachiainto a container ?
Choose a newfangled pot that is at least as big as the container it was growing in , or you’re able to utilise one that is a few inches larger . The container should have at least one drainage gob for excess water to run out of .
Use aloamy , well - draining pot soilthat containspeatorcoconut coirfor your young houseplant .

Miracle - Gro Indoor Potting Mix is one of my preferent option because it ’s both pee retentive and it drain well .
It also has build up - in plant food , so you do n’t have to feed your plant again for the first six months after imbed .
Miracle - Gro Potting Mix

you could find six - quart udder of Miracle - Gro Potting Mixavailable at Home Depot .
Place some territory in the bottom of the new container to ensure that the plant is grow at the same deepness as it was before .
check that the soil in the original container is slightly dampish before you start working .

get rid of the plant from the moldable nursery potbelly by gently squeezing the English to relax it , and then cautiously tug out the plant by gripping it at the base of the stem or stems .
Put the flora in the container and fill in around it with dirt . Pack the soil down and give it a good soak , allowing the superfluous body of water to run out out of the holes in the bottom of the pot .
Repot every twelvemonth or two to keep your dumb cane happy . If you see roots poking up out of the surface of the soil or ringing the perimeter of the container , it ’s time to repot .

I care to poke a finger into the border to finger for ascendent , or you could pull the plant out and study the situation once a yr or so .
You also want to refresh the soil every two years or so . quondam ground tends to get succinct and fall behind nutrients .
Place filth in the base of the new container so that the flora sits at the same height it was before , if necessary .

How to Grow
Now it ’s time for the easy part : get quick to sit down back and enjoy your newfangled beauty .
After you happen a adept post for it to grow in , all you need to do otherwise is bring home the bacon it with food and water now and then .
This is n’t a plant life that you desire to target in a bright W - face window , as dumb cane prefers fond shade and too much verbatim light can cause tip burn .
These can grow in a spot with at least six 60 minutes of collateral sunlight , but you need to make a special effort to keep them well water , so they do n’t get too dry with the additional brightness level .
They can also adjust to low light , but they will grow more lento . Be sure to splay flora positioned in down abstemious conditions frequently , to preclude them from get to for the Inner Light and growing raggedly .
A location where temperatures remain between 60 and 75 ° F is ideal , but these plants can tolerate cooler temperature down to 50 ° F and heat up to 90 ° F for short periods without suffering .
Dieffenbachiaplants prefer moist soil that is tolerate to dry out out a little in between watering . let the top inch to dry before devote them a drinking , but be sure that you never let them sit in torpid soil .
If the leaves pop out to droop , that ’s a sign that you need to give your plant a good boozing . check off the territory and add H2O if it ’s dry .
To water , soak at the stain level until water system run out of the drainage holes . Remove the dish antenna and toss the extra water out after it is done drain .
These flora favour humidity above around 60 percent , but do n’t worry . They ’ll do fine in teetotal line as well .
Just note that speechless cane leaves can start to turn browned at the tips if the plant is n’t baffle enough water or if the air humidity is too low . To forbid this , consider placing the plant life on a pebble tray or purchase a humidifier .
you may make your own by put pebbles in a shallow tray and filling it with water , or you may buy a pre - made tray to make life a little easier .
Brussel ’s Humidity Tray isavailable from Amazonif you decide to go that route .
I ’m indolent , so I just move mine to the bathroom during the siccative months ( usually winter ) if the leaf take off to develop brown tips .
Dumb cane are lumbering feeder , but do n’t pull out the fertilizer just yet . You desire to regain the correct equaliser between applying so much plant food that the flora develop too quickly , and giving it so little that it struggles to survive .
Plants that aregrowing in low lightneed less fertilizer than single placed in brighter illumination , and they will need little or no fertiliser during the dormant wintertime point .
Lilly Miller All Purpose Plant Food
pick out a balanced fertilizer – with an NPK ratio that is even , like 5 - 5 - 5 or 10 - 10 - 10 – like Lilly Miller ’s All Purpose Plant Food , available on Amazon .
Simply adulterate in H2O and apply to the land every six weeks or so during the grow season .
If you comment curled leave with brown edge and the soil is n’t extremely dry , you ’ve likely added too much fertilizer . Reduce the oftenness with which you ’re inseminate or apply it at half strength .
If you use soil with bestow fertilizer , do n’t fertilize for the first six month after planting . Otherwise , you could start your fertilizer mundane straight away .
Growing Tips
Pruning and Maintenance
There ’s no motive to prune your dumb cane , but if you find any leave that are shrivel up and chocolate-brown , yellow , or otherwise untempting , you could trim them off with a clean pair of clipper .
If your plant get tall and leggy with an exposed fore , palpate free to propagate it via stem slip as describe above .
If you do n’t wish the look of a marvelous , long-shanked plant , but you do n’t need to distribute it , you could either chuck out it out and start up smart or do what I do :
When my dumb canes start to wait like palm trees , I merely cut the root word with a duad of clipper to about an inch above the soil storey .
Put the works in a smear with smart , indirect light and keep the soil moist . Within a few weeks , new growing will come out from the base of the stem and you may start fresh .
Dust the leafage every few weeks with a moist cloth . foliage that are covered in a layer of rubble are n’t able to photosynthesize effectively .
Cultivars to Select
Sellers often do n’t specify which species they ’re sell , though they ’ll sometimes describe the cultivar .
It does n’t really weigh much , since they all have the same growing requirements . These cultivar are some of the more popular and pretty options out there .
Camille
D. maculata‘Camille ’ stands out because of its strike foliage pattern , which has a wide clean and loose light-green dappled center edge in dark green .
In low spark , the leaf become more green than dappled . This one grows about three feet tall and is quite shaggy-coated .
Compacta
If you have a small , poorly lit corner to satisfy , ‘ Compacta ’ ( D. maculata ) might be just the tag . It stays much smaller than most other variety , rarely growing beyond 18 inches grandiloquent .
‘ Compacta ’
The leaves boast a blotchy , cream - colored form along the center of the leaves , with a wide green margin .
you’re able to find plants in six - inch pots uncommitted fromCalifornia Tropicals via Amazon .
Exotica
D. maculata‘Exotica ’ has a more upright growth habit than other diversity and develop up to 24 inch tall .
The leaves are light-green with a marbleized creamy yellow form that bears a fall upon resemblance to the merle pattern picture on the coats of certain type of dogs .
Marianne
Sometimes called ‘ Tropic Marianne ’ or ‘ Maryanne,’D. maculata‘Marianne ’ grows to about three fundament marvelous at maturity . It has oversized parting with a creamy substance and fragile , dark-skinned green margins .
Unlike many others on this list , the plaza of each leaf is a single color that gradually fades into the margin rather than having a marbleized or stippled pattern .
Rudolph Roehrs
D. maculata‘Rudolph Roehrs ’ has pale , speckled yellow and white leaf with dour green leeway and gullible veins . The foliage almost look as though someone splattered it with paint .
This one grows anywhere from four to six feet tall , so it ’s well for expectant space .
Tropic Snow
‘ Tropic Snow ’ stretches up to six foot marvellous when it ’s full grown .
The leaves of thisD. seguinecultivar have a striking marbled green centre , with dark green midribs and gross profit .
‘ Tropic Snow ’
you’re able to find plant in three - gallon containersavailable from Fast Growing Trees .
Superba
‘ Superba ’ ( D. maculata ) has thicker parting than other members of this mintage .
And the foliage has a mottled cream and light greenish convention reaching to the edges of the leaf , rather than just being located in the centre like what you ’ll see with many other cultivar .
Expect ‘ Superba ’ to grow to about three groundwork tall .
Vesuvius
‘ Mt. Vesuvius ’ is a standout in theD. amoenaspecies because of its explosively dapple leafage .
The margin are dark greenish , while the center of each monolithic leaf has pick , yellow , and wanton green marbling that diverge from bantam dumbbell - sized spots to magnanimous patches that nearly cover the intact leafage .
This one grows to a large size indoors , to an norm of three feet in elevation , but I ’ve determine them reach up to five infantry in ideal conditions .
Managing Pests and Disease
obtuse cane is a sturdy plant that resists most cuss and disease .
If you keep it intelligent by watering well , repotting , fertilizing , and disperse as needed , it should be well on its way to withstanding any potential problems .
Still , there are a few worm and disease that you ’ll want to keep an centre out for .
Insects
Wonder what type of bugs bugDieffenbachia ? There are n’t a net ton , but the common houseplant pest defendant can sometimes be found lurking around .
aphid are an extremely common pest both indoors and out . There are thousands of different species and hundreds of them that lash out veggies and ornamental , all from the Aphididae family .
The adult are about an 8th of an inch long and can be tan , green , yellowed , pink , gray , bloodless , or black .
These petite pests suck on stem turn and leaves . As they feed , they secrete a unenviable substance called honeydew . If you distinguish ants on your houseplant , look closer .
You might have an aphid infestation , since pismire are attracted to the honeydew . The steamy substance alsoattracts sooty mold .
gravely infest works can have yellowed spots , yellowing leaves , or stunted development .
The first wrinkle of fire you should utilise is to take your dull cane to your shower or sink , if potential , and spray the leaves with a strong clap of H2O .
This will rap off the aphid and you’re able to wash them right down the drain .
If that is n’t possible , neem rock oil is another discussion option .
Dilute neem petroleum accord to the manufacturing business ’s directions and spray the leaf , taking attention to spray the undersurface where sneaky aphids may be hang out . Reapply after a week .
Bonide Neem Oil dressed ore
Neem oil is also handy to have around for treating a number of other pests and disease .
If you do n’t have some already , you’re able to purchaseBonide Neem crude oil dressed ore at Arbico Organics .
You canlearn more about how to control aphid in this guide .
Say you ’re walk by yourDieffenbachiaone day and you point out that it looks like it has little fluffy bits of cotton on it .
You ’ve probably have mealy bug ( unless someone has been walking around tossing cotton wool bits in your house ) .
These little pests from the Pseudococcidae phratry are lenient - bodied louse that are often covered in a fluffy , waxy , livid material .
You ’ll most often point out this pest on the undersides of the leave of absence and on the cane , where they cling out and suck the sap out of your plant , result in lily-livered leaves and stunted growth .
A tough enough plague can even shoot down an entire plant .
As if that was n’t uncollectible enough , they secrete honeydew just like aphid do , attracting emmet and sooty mold .
If you do n’t have a Brobdingnagian number of dirt ball on your industrial plant , douse a cotton mop in fray alcohol and pass over it on each item-by-item bug . Do n’t touch the plant with the alcoholic drink , as this can damage the foliage .
If you have a freehanded infestation , it ’s time to break out the insecticidal soap .
Bonide Insecticidal Soap
Arbico Organicscarries 12 or 32 ounce bottles of Bonide Insecticidal Soap that you’re able to spray directly on the foliation of your houseplants – be sure to apply to the undersides as well .
You ’ll belike require to reapply every week or semiweekly a few times to wholly uproot an infestation .
Read more about moderate mealybugs here .
wanderer mite , got ta bang em – right ? Wait . No , they suck . Literally .
Pretty much every outdoor gardener or anyone with a few houseplant is move to flow into spider mites at some point .
These midget arachnids from the Teranychidae kinsfolk puncture plant with their mouthparts and suck out the sap .
While they prefer spicy , dry , dusty environments , they attack one C of different plants in a blanket range of condition .
You might see the bugs themselves , but they are really humble , so it ’s far more vernacular to see the amercement webbing they go away behind .
They can cause discolored stippling or brown spot on leave . Foliage may also twist yellow .
First , seek to make condition unpleasant for these bugs . A humid surroundings of above 80 percent and unconstipated dusting of the folio help keep them away .
you’re able to also give your plant life a unspoiled shower with a hand-held schnozzle to criticize the bug loose . You might have to do this once a week for several weeks .
Neem oil and rosemary essential vegetable oil are an in effect control for wanderer mites .
Use a teaspoonful of rosemary oil per cup of weewee and spray the leaves once a week until you do n’t see any more mites .
pluck up rosemary all important oilat Amazonto help with your mite battle .
instruct more about wanderer mite ascendancy here .
Disease
While it is n’t common , it ’s not insufferable for your speechless cane to precipitate ill with a fungal or bacterial contagion . Here are two vulgar ones to watch out for .
Anthracnose is triggered by the fungusColletotrichum gloeosporioides . When it assault , it causes rotary tan or chocolate-brown spots with yellowed allowance to form on the leafage .
daub may appear water soaked or ironic .
Neem oil is a proficient option to embark on with to command anthracnose . mix three parts neem oil and one part water . Spray the leafage once every few days for several week or until you see healthy , new foliage issue .
Leaves with hole wo n’t heal , but yellow should ameliorate , so take in for that , as well .
CEASE Biological fungicide is another constituent handling option that use the beneficial bacteriaBacillus subtilisto kill off fungi . Dilute it accord to the maker ’s direction and spray the leave-taking .
Bacterial foliage stain causes little fleeceable or gray R-2 to appear on the foliation . As the disease progresses , they can become larger and may even merge to form a lesion .
The spots may turn brown or black and the pith may fall out . Impacted leaves may also turn xanthous .
This disease is cause byErwinia carotovoraorE. chrysanthemiand , unfortunately , there is no cure .
Remove any infected leafage . As a prophylactic measure , be sure to water at the filth level to keep the disease from spreading as splashing urine can spread the bacteria .
Be utterly sure that you sanitize your tool before and after you utilise them on an infected works , in a 10:1 commixture of urine and bleach , or you risk spreading the disease further .
If all of the stems of the full plant commence to show symptom , you ’ll ask to throw it out .
Best Uses
Dieffenbachiaexcels as a container specimen both indoors and out . If you survive in Zones 10 - 12 , you’re able to also grow it outside in the garden in aggregative plantings , borders , or as an accent .
Indoors , it can brighten up a gloomy corner since it survive well in low luminosity . I think it ’s ideal in a bathroom because there ’s portion of humidity there and not always a lot of visible radiation .
Because they can grow up to six feet magniloquent , they also make a dramatic command if you need a expectant specimen to fulfill an empty place .
They ’re ideal for begin houseplant enthusiast because they can deal a second of neglect , plus they add some beautiful texture to your inside .
