“ Why do n’t new the great unwashed garden ? ” I ca n’t separate you how often I ’ve been asked that question , in a variety of way , as a “ vernal ” nurseryman myself . It ’s always perplexing , because I am a young person who does garden , and I certainly do n’t consider myself a representative for my contemporaries . The only serious reply I can give is , “ Well , I garden . ” When that is n’t enough , I tend to go on about my gardening business .
That say , I have n’t always produced a podcast either . I decide this topic – why do n’t Gen X and Gen Y garden?–deserved some probe . This calendar month , we bring in you the first in a two - part serial publication on just that . In this installment , we ’ll essay to wrap our brains around the issue itself , and in part two , later this spring , we ’ll look at ways Gen X / Y gardeners we know have come to horticulture , how it hap , and what we can learn from their experience .
The write up of this month ’s twosome of Edgar Albert Guest ( one Gen X , one Gen Y ) , parallel the dichotomies of those generations as they converge and depart . To bulge out , both had similar experience in that they mature up with plants and nature , and those experiences inform their world vista today .

Kelly Norris lectures on the topic : “ I ’m more than convinced [ that ] when those fundamental moments take office in the garden , there is something very magical , there is something go about those experience on the human psyche . ” Norris is the possessor of a nursery , Rainbow Iris Farm , and author ofA Guide to Bearded Irises : crop the Rainbow for Beginners and Enthusiasts , due out in May .
Norris ’ path and that of my other Edgar Guest , Fine Gardeningblogger and author Amanda Thomsen , deviate in that he devoted his life to horticulture as a stripling , while she put it down and returned by chance in her mid - twenties . Thomsen wonders how life might be different for her and others like her if they ’d been mindful of the career options available in gardening industry .
“ No one ever said [ to me ] ‘ Hey , did you have intercourse that horticulture is something you may do ? ' ” says Thomsen . “ How cool are the parents who are like , ‘ You know what you should be ? An arborist . ' ”

Moreover , both are voracious consumers of horticulture , even as they receive it an industry that ’s out of touch with what appeal them as consumers , and find themselves besieged by the same enquiry I have : “ Why do n’t citizenry your age garden ? ” As such , both have give the idea some thought .
“ I do n’t need a afternoon tea cozy , ” pronounce Thomsen . “ I came in for seeded player . ”
