The common elder is a deciduous plant that inhabit timberland areas throughout the United States , Canada and Alaska . It is oft found near lake , swampy regions and other orbit where soil persist moist or even wet . The industrial plant produces a berry that has a slenderly sweet and tart savour . The leaves of elderberry industrial plant can facilitate to identify it from other plants , such as water hemlock , similar in appearing to elderberry , but extremely toxic .

Plant

Elderberries grow as large bush or small trees . They can oft make 12 to 20 feet in height . They produce several ramify body from the base of the plant that grow upwards .The bark is grayish brown in color , thin and comparatively smooth , becoming rough with age . The works also develop umbrella - similar sprays of tiny white-hot flowers that eventually form little bluish imperial berry that are eatable . Though the plant life is deciduous , it is often evergreen in the southerly United States .

Leaves

The leaf of the elderberry plant are colonial , with between five and 11 leaflets along either side of a long , tenuous leaf theme . The stems are arranged opposite each other along the arm of the plant life . Each stem has a gutter on top running down the entire length of the base . The leaf holds five to 11 booklet on either side of the root with a concluding booklet at the end .

Leaflets

Each leaflet is egg-shaped or spear - shaped . The leaflets are colour dark green on the upper surface and or lighter underneath . Water Hemlock

Leaf designation can be used to differentiate between comestible elderberry plants and toxicant water hemlock . Both mintage grow in moist or loaded environments .
