These wood templates will save you a lot of time making evenly-spaced planting holes.
I ’ll lead off this post with two entrance money . First – that I ’m separate when it comes to how I want the plants and layout of my garden to look . The obsessional - compulsive , perfectionist part of me wants everything to benearperfect . The set - back , free spirit part then immediately reminds me that , “ the plants could deal less if they ’re not all straight , ” or that “ you ’re not trying to gain ground an accolade . ”
In my attempts to side with the perfectionist in me , I ’ve build tool to either save sentence or fulfill that desire to have all of my seedlings , plants , or row evenly space .
My 2d admission is that I have not yet implement the Square Foot Gardening methodological analysis to my garden plan – at least not completely . As I started to experiment more with planting in foursquare rather than rows , I immediately saw a penury for something that could save me fourth dimension and serve industrial plant seeds evenly .

In Square Foot Gardening , the uncouth quantity used in planting are 16 , 9 , 4 , and 1 per satisfying foot . So , to reach this , I built a stage set of four “ templates ” ( or “ gigue ” in the machinery world ) . Granted , the holes create by this tool may be too wide or deep for sealed seed ; this can be remedied by simply filling in the fix with a pinch or two of stain .
The list of things you ’ll ask :
1 . Four 1 - ft by 1 - foot piece of plyboard , either 3/8″ or 1/2″ loggerheaded . utilise whatever your dwelling center has that will necessitate the least amount of cut . If you only need to have 2 - 3 cuts made , they should be able to do that for you free of complaint . If you wish to do the cutting of course , you ’ll necessitate a proverb .

2 . mag tape step , hearty or ruler for measuring
3 . Pencil or permanent marker
4 . 30 “ marking pickle Godhead ” – small aim to make holes in the soil . I establish some wood “ spool ” from my local craft store .

5 . Wood gum , water - resistent or waterproofed
6 . Four door or cabinet handles
7 . Sandpaper ( optional – if you wish to smooth out the edges of the dining table )

8 . Wood varnish , rouge or dirt ( again , optional if you wish to dress up your unexampled peter )
Skill Level :
Easy

Construction :
1 . Take the plyboard and issue four 1 - foot x 1 - foot square pieces from it . If necessary , sand the edges or any rough areas(Photo A ) .
16 Points Per Square Foot Template :

2 . evaluate 1 1/2″ from the boundary , put 2 - 3 pencil or penitentiary marks along each side(Photo B ) . Then , using these soft touch , draw a scout line around the board . This region is about 9″ foursquare . Then , put a bull’s eye at the 3″ and 6″ points along each side of the gameboard . Draw lines connecting these points , from one side of the circuit board to the other(Photo C ) . The board should now have a 9 - square “ grid ” drawn on it(Photo D ) .
9 Points Per Square Foot Template :
3 . Measuring 2 1/2″ from the edge , again put 2 - 3 marker along each side . Then , using these mug , draw a guide telephone circuit around the board . This area is about 9″ lame . Then , put a grade at the 4″ point along each side of the board ( which is essentially the center of the line ) . hooking seam connecting these point , from one side of the circuit board to the other . The board should now have a 4 - straightforward control grid drawn on it(Photo E ) .

4 point Per Square Foot Template :
5 . evaluate 3 1/2″ from the sharpness this sentence , put 2 - 3 stain along each side . Then , using these marks , draw a guide line around the board . This area is about 6″ square . Draw lines link these point , from one side of the board to the other . The board should now have a single square puff on it(Photo F ) .
1 period Per Square Foot Template :

6 . Measure 6″ from the edge , around each side , and put a mug . Draw two guide bank line across the board . The lines should cross at the center pointedness of the gameboard .
Now that we have all of our pathfinder cable drawn , they will show where we will be gluing our “ marking hole makers ” . To make the mess , I found some forest “ bobbin ” from a trade store . They are 3/4″ wide-eyed x 1″ high , perfect for do a very visible hole in the soil(Photo G ) . you’re able to also use wooden “ pearl ” or anything else you see that will make a small noticeable hole . If you are planting seeds that require a much shorter deepness ( i.e. lettuce , spinach plant , etc . ) , you could come back and satiate the trap with a pinch or two of territory .
7 . Using a undecomposed water resistant/ waterproof wood glue , paste the spools ( in this case ) to the control board at the points created by the lines we drew in steps 2 - 6(Photo total heat ) .

8 . You ’ll have 16 to glue on the first board(Photo I ) , 9 on the second board , 4 on the third board , and finally 1 on the last board . Allow those to dry out for at least a few minute .
9 . Attach one of the door handles to the opposite side of each board . I measured and label the center point on the board so that the handle would be put correctly ( and because of that ‘ perfectionist ’ thing)(Photo J ) .
At this tip you ’re basically done . To use them , you simply commit the board in the corner of the layer and press down on the handle(Photo K ) . Here ’s thecoolpart . It not only makes the holes that you ’ll put the come into , it also score the boundary of the square groundwork itself ! To tot more sets of hole , you line up the St. Mark made in the dirt with the edge of the board . Voila !

Mel Bartholomew would be gallant .
