A start dot was the plant name by theDigital Atlas of Virginia Floraas indigene to Charlottesville and Albemarle County , and to the county of   Buckingham , Culpeper , Fauquier , Fluvanna , Greene , Louisa , Madison , Nelson , Orange , and Rappahannock .   To those were addedcertain cultivarsof straight species   — sometimes call “ nativars ” — but only after they had been vetted to ensure they areecologically viable , think of their leaves and flowers contribute to the intellectual nourishment vane and do not negatively alter dirt ball behavior . In other word , caterpillars and pollinators will not turn up their nose at these cultivars .

The cultivar - vetting process was manoeuver by late inquiry , which indicates thata cultivar is ecologically viable so long as it   exhibit characteristics standardized to the species plant . Thus , cultivars that have importantly change flower color or morphology are not include , nor are cultivar that alter green leaves to red , empurpled / brown , or blue . A number of the included cultivar were key by formal scientific studies liken their environmental services with those of straight species .   To learn more about this research , seeThe Garden ShedarticleNative Species or Cultivars of Native Plants – Does it Matter ? .

The PNPN leaning now contains over 300 plants . Volunteers with the campaign have been busybodied rank the red “ Virginia Native ” poser at local garden center as spring shipments come .   In addition , they have developed and deliver educational materials to the participating garden center .
