A gardener trades Orange County sunshine for mountain views in Tacoma
Hi GPODers ! Today we ’re in the garden of Jo Ann , and seeing how she ’s fare after a move from cheery SoCal to the lavish Pacific Northwest :
My name is Jo Ann Sarlese . My married man and I moved to this lovely property in Brown ’s Point , Northeast Tacoma , Washington , four year ago from Orange County in Southern California . I consider myself a fair knowledgeable nurseryman , but not up here in Washington . I ’ve had a destiny to learn . I have never pick up many of the plant in our new railyard , so I have relied a lot on plant life apps and friends to distinguish what is here .
As the springtime gave way to summertime , I realized how overgrown the yard was . We hire a crew to clean up and exculpate out the yard . Then we begin to give the garden some structure . Like all garden , it ’s an ongoing project .

This area is along the waterfall orbit . The endearing orangish tulip with the picot edged petal is the foresighted durable tulip in the M . Purple azalea and blade fern(Polystichummunitum , Zones 4–9)are in the foreground , and from left to right field in the scope are gnome Hinoki cypress(Chamaecyparisobtusa‘Nana Gracilis’,Zones 4–8 ) , ‘ Emperor One ’ ( red ) maple(Acerpalmatum‘Emperor 1’,Zones 5–9 ) , laceleaf maple , fernleaf full - moon maple(Acer japonicum‘Aconitifolium’,Zones 4–8 ) , and pasqueflower(Pulsatillapatens , Zones 3–7 ) .
Forest Flame Japanese pieris(Pieris‘Forest Flame ’ , Zones 5–8)with its vibrant display and cascade flowers , is a welcome sight to see after a recollective showery winter and spring .
If you ’re going to give up worthful garden material estate to a big shrub , ensure its one that serves more than just one design . The fabulous leaf of Forest Flame Nipponese pieris is compelling in and of itself , but the cascading blossom take it to the next level !

Jack - in - the - pulpit(Arisaema triphyllum , Zones 4–9)keeps itself well hidden under the large trillium - like leaves and also lasts a very long prison term .
This is the center of the yard and my favourite seat to just sit and gaze . We added the flagstone and the smokeless firepit . The tree diagram , which is the last to get its leave , is anAcer‘Paper Bark Maple ’ . The pond is environ with sword fern and Oregon wood sorrel(Oxalisoregana , Zones 7–9 ) . Above is Japanese waterfall maple(Acer palmatumvar.dissectum‘Waterfall’,Zones 5–8 ) , an orange rhododendron , and a Japanese snowbell tree(Styraxjaponicus , Zones 5–8 ) .
At the entering to the garden is a laceleaf Japanese maple , with gaga violets(Violasororia , Zones 3–7)around the base . Flanking the gate isforsythia(Forsythiaspp . and cvs . ,Zones 4–9 ) , and to the right wing is an azalea . In the foreground are mixed irises .

This side 1000 is up near the theater . In the foreground is aflame azalea(Rhododendron calendulaceum , Zones 5–7)surrounded by a hosta , calla lily(Zantedeschiaaethiopica , Zones 8–10 ) , and day lily . In back are White Knight ’ weigela(Weigelaflorida‘White Knight’,Zones 5–9)and exbury azalea , and above are cherry laurel(Prunuslaurocerasus , Zones 5–7)and unfolding cherry plum tree(Prunus cerasifera , Zones 4–8 ) .
The slim Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree is ‘ Fastigiata ’ golden rainwater tree(Koelreuteria paniculata ‘ Fastigiata’,Zones 5–9 ) . Also present are red-faced peony , assorted irises , calla lily lilies , andPaeonia‘Mons Jules Elie ’ . In the scope areMexican orange blossom(Choisyaternata , Zones 7–10)and pink exbury azalea .
The arch is covered with clematis that will soon be full of deep imperial bloom . A blanched azalea is to the left .
